Sanjay was a 13-year-old boy whose parents were daily wage laborers in a slum area of Kanpur. Education was a luxury the family couldn’t afford, so Sanjay spent his days wandering the streets, sometimes helping his parents at work.
One afternoon, he stumbled upon the Abhijeet Foundation’s community center, where he saw children his age engrossed in learning on computers. Curious, he peered through the window until a volunteer invited him inside. Hesitant but intrigued, Sanjay accepted the offer.
The foundation welcomed him with open arms, providing him with basic computer education and, more importantly, a safe space to learn and grow. Sanjay struggled at first, as he had missed years of schooling and was behind in reading and writing. The instructors noticed this and tailored their teaching methods to his needs, using interactive software to build his literacy skills alongside computer training.
Over time, Sanjay’s abilities improved dramatically. He became proficient in using educational programs and even helped other newcomers adapt to the learning environment. The foundation also provided him with meals during his time at the center, alleviating some of his family’s burdens.
Sanjay’s transformation inspired his parents to prioritize his education. With the foundation’s assistance, he enrolled in a local school while continuing his computer classes in the evenings. Sanjay now dreams of becoming a teacher to help other children like himself overcome obstacles through education.
